One man killed in chain-reaction collision on I-57

Friday afternoon, a semitrailer chain-reaction accident took place on Interstate 57 and claimed the life of one man.

According to a police report, the trucking accident occurred when the 53-year-old driver of a flat bed tractor trailer lost control of his vehicle when attempting to slow down for stopped traffic. He then struck a four-door passenger vehicle.

This impact sent the passenger car into a another semitrailer. A fourth vehicle sideswiped the tractor trailer during the collision. The Rantoul Fire Department responded to the scene of the accident, which was just five miles from the city of Rantoul, and had to extricate the 22-year-old driver of the car from the vehicle.

Neither of the two semitrailer drivers were injured in the collision, but the 22-year-old was later pronounced dead by the Champaign County Coroner.  The 53-year-old driver of the semitrailer was ticketed with failure to reduce speed in order to avoid a collision.

Large trucks can be particularly difficult to drive and if a driver is not paying attention to their surroundings, serious accidents can occur as a result. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victims in the collision.
