Interstate 74 Accident Injures Rantoul Man
A Rantoul man who swerved to avoid a road hazard was hurt Friday afternoon after he crashed into a median wall.
Police stated that 42-year-old David Abernathy was driving on Interstate 74 in Champaign-Urbana behind Andrew J. Hopper, 22, who lives in Champaign. According to the accident report, powerful gusts of wind lifted a ladder rack that was secured to Hopper’s vehicle and sent it tumbling into the road behind him.
In an attempt to avoid the ladder, Abernathy swung his car to the left, but lost control when he crashed into the highway’s central median. Abernathy’s vehicle spun across the road to the right, and finally landed in a ditch on the right side of the highway.
Abernathy sustained pressing injuries and had to be taken to Presence Covenant Medical Center. The hospital did not provide a report on the severity of Abernathy’s injuries, or his current condition. Hopper was unhurt during the incident.
