Crop Duster Inadvertently Sprays 79 Individuals with Fungicide

On Thursday, 79 teens were admitted to the Carle Foundation Hospital after exposure to fungicide. The teens were detasseling corn in southern Champaign County when they were inadvertently hit with fungicide being sprayed by an aerial crop duster in an adjacent field. Emergency services were notified immediately in order to block off roads and allow for emergency vehicle access and proper decontamination. The local fire department followed standard safety procedures including washing and changing clothes as appropriate.

Field crews are trained in how to properly respond to incidents such as this, allowing for the most effective decontamination in order to avoid further injury. The teens were taken to Carle Hospital as a precaution. A few were treated for minor skin irritations, but there were no reports of serious injury. The aerial crop duster was only spraying a fine mist, making the exposure to the fungicide not life-threatening.

Fortunately no one was seriously injured in this incident, but the legal team at Spiros Law, P.C., understands that this is not always the case.  If you or someone you know has suffered an injury due to a third party’s negligence, contact 217-328-2828 and let us help you pursue financial compensation and justice.
