OSHA cites 6 companies for exposing workers to asbestos, other dangers

Workers from different companies who were called in to repair some damage in the cafeteria of Chute Middle School in Evanston, Illinois received exposure to asbestos, lead, and electrical dangers, a recent report from the United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Illinois Department of Public Health showed.

OSHA assigned penalties amounting to $132,040 to six companies, including Mount Prospect-based Nicholas & Associates, Inc., Northbrook-based F.E. Moran, Inc., Evanston-based Environmental Services Firm, Inc., DeKalb-based DeKalb Mechanical Inc., Cicero-based ASAP Environmental, Inc., and Chicago-based B.B. Construction Enterprise, Inc.

According to Angeline Loftus, OSHA’s area director at the Chicago north area office in Des Plaines, asbestos is linked to some ill effects in the body, such as the development of lung cancer and other detrimental health conditions.
