Former Champaign wrestling star killed in two-vehicle collision

Last Thursday, 24-year-old Stephen Montez, a former Champaign resident and St. Thomas More wrestling star, was killed in a car accident in Iroquois County. According to reports from the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office, Montez’s SUV was struck in an intersection by a Ford tuck that was hauling a trailer with a lawnmower behind it. The collision caused both vehicles to leave the roadway and come to rest in a nearby ditch after both vehicles rolled over numerous times.

Montez was airlifted to Carle Foundation Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:02 pm. The driver and passenger in the Ford truck were listed as “stable” on Friday afternoon.

Montez was well-known in the area for being the first wrestler at St. Thomas More to achieve 100 career wins. By the time he graduated, Montez had amassed an impressive 114 wins and qualified for state. He had just finished a degree in horticulture from the University of Illinois in 2014 and was preparing to go into business with his father.
