Legislature passes bill allowing raise in taxes for nursing home safety reform

Posted on January 13th, 2011 No Comments

State lawmakers have announced that they have passed a bill that will hike taxes currently levied on nursing homes in order to raise money for safety reform.

After raising the estimated $145 million, the government health care will match the amount with money collected for Medicaid.

Nursing home executives have said that the funds will help pay for more staffing at nursing home facilities, finance a reform to fix the broken system and hire more state inspectors. Of the $290 million, nearly 86 percent will be going to Illinois facilities.

Illinois nursing to close doors in 90 days

A nursing home in southern Illinois will be closing its doors in 90 days after the state Department of Public Health ordered them to surrender their license for failing to comply to the standards of safety.

The Orchard Court Nursing Home, that houses 15 residents, will also have to pay $12,000 as a part of the settlement that was agreed upon. The Department of Public Health explains the multiple violations that the home is guilty of in a 50 page report.

The violations include failing to protect residents from violent attacks from other residents. Many of the incidents revolve around an 18-year-old mental retarded resident that has attacked the other residents. Officials determined that it was the nursing home staff’s position to create a care plan for each resident and they failed to this with the resident causing other residents to be injured.
