Motorist Facing Charges after Fatal Run-in with Cyclist
Samuel Meadows, a 21-year-old man, was arrested on Sunday morning facing multiple charges related to a multiple victim bicycle accident. The Cole County sheriff’s office states that around 9 pm on Saturday July 6, five individuals riding bicycles were struck by a driver alleged to be Meadows near the Bent Tree Golf Course.
Following the accident, four of the cyclists were rushed to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, where 16-year-old Leonard Beachy was later pronounced dead. All other victims were treated and released without further incident. The fifth victim’s condition is currently unknown, but they were transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
The Cole County Sheriff’s office is charging Meadows with aggravated driving under the influence as well as leaving the scene of a personal injury or fatal accident. Meadows was arrested just after midnight on Sunday morning.
