Local bus strikes UI student

A young woman was recently struck and subsequently trapped under a Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) bus, according to reports from The News-Gazette.

The incident happened at the corner of Kirby Avenue and First Street around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday October 28. The University of Illinois student’s current condition is not known, but those at the scene stated that the victim was alert and speaking to emergency personnel as she was being transported by ambulance to Carle Foundation Hospital. Traffic was temporarily re-directed while the site was being cleared.

MTD representatives are reportedly cooperating with law enforcement. Executive Director Karl Gnadt said that they “take every accident very seriously” regardless of the severity, and intend to perform a thorough investigation into the incident. Gnadt emphasized that they make safety their chief priority.

No citations have been issued yet, as the cause of the accident is currently being evaluated by the UI Police Department. Our thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones at this difficult time.
