Rauner’s plan to cut workers’ compensation benefits

As compensation for dangers faced on the job, workers have the assurance of incurring workers’ compensation benefits should they become injured in their line of work. However, since 2003, over 30 states have approved measures that have “reduced benefits for injured workers, created hurdles for medical care, or made it more difficult for workers to qualify,” reports from ProPublica and NPR show.

If Governor Rauner has a say in it, Illinois may be the next state to resort to such measures. Rauner wants to reduce the eligibility for workers’ compensation significantly by requiring an injury to account for at least 50% of the claim. Veteran workers’ compensation industry expert John Burton argues, “What the governor is proposing is to take a lot of cases that have been compensable for the last 50 years and to throw them out.”

If your employer has failed to maintain a safe working environment and has compromised your safety, you are likely entitled to workers’ compensation benefits.
