Pregnant woman killed when tractor-trailer part crashes through windshield on I-80

A pregnant Coal City woman was killed when a loose wheel hub detached from a semi-truck’s rear tractor axle and crashed through her windshield as she was driving on I-80. Authorities say the 38-year-old expectant mother was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The accident occurred at 2:18 p.m. near Rowell Avenue on the southeast side of Joliet.

The victim was a mother to three girls and was expecting her fourth, a son, in April. According to Illinois State Police, the semi truck was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 when the wheel hub became detached and traveled into the westbound lanes, striking the victim’s vehicle. The driver of the semi truck was charged with an unsafe equipment Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act violation.
