Springfield woman hit by bus in I-72 accident identified

The identity of a woman who was hit by a bus on I-72 in rural Cisco on Saturday night has been released by the Macon County Coroner. Authorities say the woman was 63-year-old Vicki S. Gardner, of Springfield.

Ms. Gardner’s vehicle had apparently skidded off the road into the median at 7:59 p.m. due to slick conditions caused by freezing rain and sleet. Three other vehicles had also slid into the median due to the hazardous conditions. After coming to a stop, Ms. Gardner exited the vehicle and was standing in the median when she was struck by a bus driven by a 61-year-old man from Decatur. The bus also lost control on the highway and crashed through the guardrail, crossed the westbound lanes of I-72, and came to rest in the ditch.

Ms. Gardner was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say the bus driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and neither he nor any of the 27 passengers on the bus were injured.

Authorities are still investigating the crash, and more details on this story can be found on The News-Gazette. We will update this story with any new developments.
