Woman killed after car trouble
Shana Outlaw, 23, of Rantoul, died Thursday morning after sustaining multiple traumatic injuries in a crash. She and her three children, aged 6, 4, and 8 months, were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where Ms. Outlaw was pronounced dead. The children’s injuries were non-life-threatening.
Outlaw was traveling south on U.S. 45 near Urbana, south of Leverett Lane. She began to have car trouble, and so she pulled over and exited her vehicle. While outside of her vehicle, a 30-year-old East Lynn man in a truck struck her vehicle, sending her car into a ditch. The truck flipped and landed in the left lane. Outlaw was found in the ditch, though authorities are unsure what caused her to end up there.
The accident caused the southbound lanes of the road to be closed for several hours while authorities investigated. Authorities also reported a disturbance in the emergency room where Outlaw was taken, caused by Outlaw’s distraught family members. No one was harmed or arrested in the emergency room.
The truck driver, whose name has not been released to the public, was issued a ticket for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
