School Bus Driver Ticketed in Accident
On October 11th around 4:00 pm, a school bus transporting six students was involved in a collision. The school bus was southbound on County Road 2000 E when it slowly rolled into the middle of the intersection and stopped there. While sitting in the intersection, it was struck on its passenger-side fender by an eastbound Ford Focus that was driven by Jeremiah D. Delaney, 44, of rural Rankin. Police were called to the scene and ticketed the driver of the school bus, Donald V. Burklund, 79, of rural Paxton, for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The police report said the car’s front bumper struck the bus’s front bumper passenger-side tire and fender, causing damage to both vehicles. After the accident, the bus reversed out of the intersection. According to the police report, Delaney had the right-of-way, since there are no signs at the intersection for traffic on 200 N, but there are stop signs for traffic on 2000 E.
There were six children on the bus at the time of the accident. All of the children were examined at the scene by Gibson Area Ambulance Service paramedics before being released to their parents, the police report said. Burklund also was not injured and was able to drive the bus from the scene, the report said.
Delaney, the driver of the Ford Focus was transported by Gibson Area Ambulance Service to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana and his car was towed from the scene.
