June is National Safety Month

The month of June is recognized as National Safety Month, which is promoted by the National Safety Council each year. The purpose of National Safety Month is to focus on reducing leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road, as well as in homes and communities. The National Safety Council advises people to refrain from alcohol or drug use, speeding and distracted driving, which are the three biggest causes of fatalities on the road. Interestingly, employers play a large role in keeping the roads safe. Similarly to the work place, employers like to dictate safety on the roads as well. To prevent motor vehicle crashes involving employees, employers should consider offering the following preventative measures:  defensive driving courses, programs for employees with alcohol or drug problems, enacting a cell phone policy to prevent distracted driving, or enacting a policy that requires employees to wear seat belts. These safety measures taken by employers could help ensure safer drivers and end distracted driving amongst their employees.

Although, in general, all drivers should promote safety through wearing seatbelts, understanding safety features, and by educating teens and inexperienced drivers. It is approximated that the United States has experienced at least 40,000 deaths on the roadways for the past three consecutive years. This alarming number reveals the need for drivers to become more committed in creating a culture of safer driving. The National Safety Council addresses a few ways that motorists can help ensure safer roads, including practicing defensive driving, immediately getting recalls on your vehicle fixed, learning how to use your vehicle’s safety systems, and avoiding impaired driving, even from prescription drugs.

Another discussion area that the National Safety Council chose to focus on this year is the dangers that can arise when driving at night. According to their research, the risk of a fatal collision is three times greater at night, especially when Daylight Savings Time ends, and more people find themselves on the road in the dark. To help reduce this number of traffic crashes at night, the National Safety Council urges drivers to:

  • Make sure your headlights are aimed correctly and clean
  • Dim your dashboard
  • Slow down to compensate for limited visibility

They also shed light on the risks of driving during rush hour, when the crowded roadways with people eager to get home after work increase the risk of a traffic collision. It is important to consider these risks when driving and to use these safe driving measures on the roadway. Whether you’re driving during rush hour, at night, or any time of the day, be sure to take extra precautions and to avoid distractions. Unfortunately, promoting safe driving measures cannot always protect people from being in a traffic collision. If you or a loved one have been in a car accident, you may be entitled to compensation.
