Illinois Plane Crash

A small plane crashed this past Tuesday morning shortly before 9 a.m. along Interstate 55 near Lincoln. Unfortunately, all three individuals aboard the plane died as it was fully engulfed once it crashed into the middle of the interstate, leaving the southbound lane of I-55 blocked until later in the afternoon. Authorities from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are now investigating the plane crash, which can take a year or more to be finalized.

The Logan County coroner has not released the victims’ identities and officials are unsure as to where the plane originated. However, the NTSB has identified the plane as a Cessna 172, a four-seat, single-engine aircraft made in 2013. A spokesperson for the Central Illinois Regional Airport reported that they have not been involved in the investigation since the origin of the plane was not from their airport and happened outside of their county.

A NTSB investigator arrived in Illinois on Tuesday evening to begin the investigation of the on-scene phase to gather facts about the crash. After documenting the crash site, the aircraft and engine will be further examined at a secure location. This tragic accident shows how unexpected a plane crash can occur.
