Death of elevator mechanic ruled an accident

Last week, 56-year-old John Hoeniges was killed in an elevator accident after he was seen heading for an elevator shaft at the Law and Justice Center. Hoeniges had been employed as a maintenance mechanic by McLean County for seven years.

A number of authorities, including the U.S. and Illinois Departments of Labor and the Illinois State Fire Marshal, are looking into the incident to determine what precisely caused Hoeniges’ death, which coroners stated resulted from blunt trauma and compressional asphyxia.

So far, McLean County officials have stated that there were no malfunctions present in the elevator that caused Hoeniges’ death.
