What is common law?
Common law is the legal system of deciding cases that has been dominant in the United States since its founding. It is the traditional system of having judges who rule on individual cases. Common law is practiced almost universally across the nation, with the exception being the use of the Napoleonic Code in Louisiana. Broad areas of the law are a part of common law, such as property law or torts.
