Two Injured in I-57 Crash

On Sunday, August 29 two people were involved in a car collision. Both people were injured and send to a local hospital. One driver was said to be traveling at a high speed, which resulted in them rear-ending another vehicle. The driver allegedly at fault has been arrested under charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a valid driver’s license, driving without insurance, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to wear a seatbelt, improper lane usage, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. According to local sources, no serious injuries were sustained.

Driving while under the influence happens more often than we may think. More than four million adults admit to driving while under the influence of alcohol, adding to the more than 121 million times a year someone drives while above the legal limit of blood alcohol concentration. A poll done in 2018 showed that over 28 million people drive while under the influence of marijuana.

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can be extremely dangerous. Not only are you putting your life in serious peril, but you are putting everyone driving on the road around you in serious danger as well. Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol impairs your decision making; you cannot understand the danger you are put in when operating a vehicle. When intoxicated, you may feel more confident in your abilities, but this is misleading. When intoxicated, your fine motor skills, such as the ones used when turning a steering wheel or pressing on the brake, are less efficient. Intoxication can cause your vision to be blurred and can cause a lack of attention. These are all things that are necessary to the operation of any vehicle.

It is important to know the dangers of driving while intoxicated so that you can prevent yourself or others from driving under the influence. However, this may not protect you from others attempting to drive under the influence. It is vital to be able to recognize other drivers on the road who may be intoxicated. Some signs to look for are:

  • Swerving past the centerline
  • Sudden lane changes
  • Swerving off the road
  • Sudden braking
  • Excessive speeding

Although being aware of your surroundings can sometimes prevent yourself from getting in a car crash, we cannot always prevent or protect ourselves against the actions of others. Sometimes we are involved in a collision that could not have been avoided. When this happens, it is important to seek medical attention immediately to take care of any injuries you may have sustained. Next, you may need to navigate through the legal process or insurance agencies to receive the compensation you deserve to cover your medical expenses, damages to your vehicle, or any other personal damages you may have faced.

Hiring an attorney well educated in car crashes can be beneficial to you. An attorney will navigate the legal process and insurance agencies while giving you time to focus on healing. If you or someone you know has recently been injured as a result of someone driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you may be entitled to some compensation.
