A recent article by Marshall Allen, titled “How Many Die from Medical Mistakes In U.S. Hospitals,” detailed how many more people are fatal victims of medical negligence than were previously believed.
The article cited a study from John T. James published in the Journal for Patient Safety. The study found that an estimated 210,000-440,000 people each year who go to the hospital for care suffer some type of preventable harm that contributes to their death. Prior to this study the most commonly cited statistic came from the “To Err is Human” report, published in the Institute of Medicine in 1999, which had calculated that an estimated 98,000 people a year were injured by preventable medical mistakes.
