Family Files Lawsuit against Illinois Nursing Home

Late last year, 92-year-old Catherine McCann, a two-year resident of the Lutheran Home for the Aged in Arlington Heights, was discovered to have maggot infestation in her ear.

McCann was, unfortunately, unable to alert nursing home caregivers to her discomfort, as she is unable to speak and has alzheimer’s. Fortunately, nursing home staff members were finally made aware of the situation when they noticed that McCann was repeatedly touching the same ear.

This problem occurred while McCann was receiving ear drop treatment for a wax build up that had occurred in her ear. During this time, a fly flew into her ear and laid eggs. 57 maggots were discovered in McCann’s ear and she ended up developing an antibiotic -resistant staph infection called MSRA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).

McCann’s husband is pursuing $50,000 in damages for the harm his wife suffered, and is citing negligence and emotional harm in his lawsuit.
