Multiple accidents on I-72 injure five
Five people were injured in three different car accidents on I-72 this past weekend. According to reports, the first incident took place on Saturday, Jan. 2, at around 12:30 pm when a westbound vehicle driven by a 22-year-old man from Edwardsville went through a median and struck an eastbound vehicle head-on.
The second accident took place less than a mile away, as a driver began slowing down because of the first accident and was struck from behind. Less than an hour later, a similar accident took place in the eastbound lanes of the roadway as another driver slowed their vehicle because of the first accident, only to be struck from behind.
All injured individuals were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital to receive treatment for their injuries. Traffic on I-72 was slow for nearly 2 hours as officials worked to clear the accidents and help ensure that the injured motorists received the treatment they needed.
