3-vehicle crash in Vermilion County leaves one dead

An accident involving three vehicles on Illinois Route 1, which caused traffic to back up for hours, left a 27-year-old male dead this past Tuesday. According to police reports, the accident took place just south of Ross Lane in Vermilion County after the driver of a Cavalier attempted to switch lanes and clipped the front end of a GMC pick-up truck driven by 36-year-old Shawn Silva. The impact caused the GMC to lose control and slide across the center turn lane, colliding head-on with a garbage truck that was being driven by Christopher Ratliff at the time.

The driver of the Cavalier was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ratliff was taken to the hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.  Police have not yet released the name of the deceased and are working on notifying the family members of the individual. No citations were issued for the accident.
