Wrong-Way, Head-On Collision

In the early morning hours, there was a head-on collision southbound Interstate 57 at the Interstate 74 interchange. After the collision, traffic was diverted off I-57 onto I-74 for about 45 minutes. Shortly after, the right lane of southbound traffic on Interstate 57 opened and traffic also used the right shoulder while authorities worked to remove the semitrailer from the left lane. The crash involved two vehicles, a Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Dawn R. Garrelts, 52, of Onarga and a semi driven by Eldemire R. Berlanga, 38, of Mexico. According to state police, the  PT Cruiser drove the wrong way on Interstate 57 and collided head-on with a semitrailer at the Interstate 74 interchange and causing injuries to the drivers of both cars. The Onarga woman was charged with aggravated DUI and was cited for improper lane usage and driving without insurance. Police reported that the collision caused heavy damage to both vehicles. Both Garrelts and Berlanga were wearing seatbelts but both still suffered injuries and were taken to a local hospital to treat for their non-life-threatening injuries. Garrelts is in good condition, while a condition for Berlanga is unknown.
