Crash On I-57 Results In Four Injuries
Over the weekend, a collision between a Nissan van and an International truck tractor resulted in the injuries to two adults and two minors. The crash occurred early Saturday evening and caused the closing of Interstate 57 for about five hours.
According to Illinois state police, the driver of the 2004 Nissan van, Petona J. Mateo, 37, of Rantoul, was driving southbound in the right lane of Interstate 57 in rural Ford County when he was rear-ended by a truck tractor. Pamela Owens, 58, of Muskegon, MI, was the driver of the International truck tractor that rear-ended Mateo.
The collision caused both vehicles to run off the highway. The van was pushed into the northbound lanes and ultimately turned over and then ignited. There with three other passengers in the van driven by Mateo. The other occupants included Felipe Juan Felipe, 40, of Rantoul, an unnamed 11-year-old boy from Rantoul and an unnamed nine-year-old girl from Rantoul. The crash caused injuries to all four passengers in the van and all were transported to Carle Foundation Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Since the crash, a state police spokesperson reported that Mateo sustained minor injuries, while Felipe was reported to be in good condition Monday morning. The conditions of the two children injured are still unknown.
Owens, the driver of the truck tractor, did not report any injuries. She received a ticket for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
