Champion Roofing fined for violation of workplace safety

Illinois-based Champion Roofing Inc. has been cited by the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for forcing workers to work on a low-sloped roof, 13 feet above the ground, without the necessary means to protect them from falling. This comes after repeated violations in the past five years for the same problem.

OSHA has determined that a total of $48,400 in penalties will be given to the company.

OSHA’s area director in Calumet City, Kathy Webb, said falls are still the number one cause of workplace deaths in the construction industry and that actions that Champion Roofing has undertaken constitute “inexcusable negligence.”
