Higher number of deaths in nursing home prompts investigation

After a dramatic increase in the number of deaths at the Champaign County Nursing Home from December through February, the board of directors and managers intend to investigate to determine whether there is a cause for this spike, it is natural, or it is an error.

Although the board received two different sets of numbers, one stating there were 42 deaths and another stating there were 60, the numbers are much higher than the 5.3 average number of deaths from the same time period last year. According to nursing home manager Scott Gima, the nursing home plans to take a look at the numbers and determine if there are any trends; however, an increased number of hospice patients has led him to believe that these numbers are not necessarily unusual.

Many board members, however, want quick investigations into and explanations for the data. This issue was discussed at the board’s meeting Monday, March 11.

While it’s unknown whether neglect or abuse is a factor in these deaths, both of these are, unfortunately, factors in many nursing home injuries and deaths. If you or a loved one has suffered due to abuse or neglect, do not hesitate to discuss your situation with a lawyer from Spiros Law, P.C.
