Local Driver Charged with Reckless Homicide and Aggravated DUI

Following a three-vehicle accident that occurred on January 8th in Monticello, a Bement man has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI. The collision that happened on Illinois 105 resulted in the death of one of the three drivers involved. Illinois State Police reported that the collision occurred at 2:01 p.m. when the Bement man was heading north in Monticello. He attempted to pass another vehicle when he collided head-on with a vehicle traveling in the south-bound lane. The woman that he collided with, also from Bement, ended up passing away due to her injuries that she sustained in the vehicle accident.

The Bement man now faces a Class 3 felony reckless homicide charge, as well as two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol. One of which is a Class 2 felony, since it resulted in the death of another person, while the other is a Class 4 felony. He is set to appear in Piatt County court on March 3rd in light of the charges he faces. In addition to his charges, he was cited for unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, driving in the left lane when use is prohibited, and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle.

This recent fatal collision points towards the serious dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol consumption affects reaction time, coordination skills, concentration, vision, and judgment. While one may not expect drunk drivers to be on the roadways in the middle of the afternoon, instances such as this one show that it can happen at any time of day and drivers must be prepared to act defensively. It is important to remember that any amount of alcohol can impair a person’s ability to operate a vehicle, and if you are planning on consuming alcohol, you should always have a designated driver or utilize driving services, such as Lyft or Uber when available.
