Mississippi woman killed in crash in Champaign County

One woman was killed and two others were injured in a car accident that occurred on Saturday afternoon in Champaign County on southbound Interstate 57 between a Ford Escape and a pickup truck leading a flatbed trailer.

Illinois State Police reported that Jerry R. McCreary II was attempting to pass the Escape in a pickup truck, but did not clear the other vehicle before moving back into the right lane, causing the flatbed trailer to hit the Escape. The impact caused Mechele Hamm of Walnut, Miss., driver of the Escape, to lose control and veer into the grassy median. Her vehicle then rolled over several times before eventually landing on its wheels.

Hamm was airlifted to Carle Foundation Hospital, while a passenger in the Escape, Teresa Box of Corinth, Miss., was transported via ambulance. Hamm and Box are listed in fair condition as of Saturday night. A third passenger, Laurie I. Chandler of Corinth, Miss., was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said none of the women were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. McCreary was uninjured in the collision, but was taken to the hospital for observation. He was issued a ticket for improper lane usage after the collision.
