Experts forecast that future workers’ compensation reforms may focus on banning physicians from dispensing prescription drugs to prevent spending for workers’ compensation claims from rising again, the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Workers Compensation Research Institute proclaimed in a Business Insurance article on March 29.
According to the managing director of casualty claims at Aon Global Risk Consulting in Los Angeles, Paul Braun, such governmental controls are essential because physicians have been prescribing certain drugs at a high cost as a means to generate revenue.
Some states have already taken a step toward preventing this practice. For instance, Indiana passed Senate Bill 294 in March 2014, a measure that allows physicians to be reimbursed for repackaged drugs dispensed only during the first eight days of a workers’ compensation injury.
