Three Vehicle Crash Results in Serious Injury and Death

A three-vehicle crash in Piatt County, south of Monticello, resulted in the death of a Bement woman the hospitalization of a Bement man. Illinois State Police reported to the scene on Illinois 105 at Piatt County Road 1350 N, just south of Monticello. According to their reports, a 22-year-old Bement man was driving his 2008 Honda Accord headed north on Illinois 105 when he moved into the southbound lane in an attempt to pass a 51-year-old Bement man who was driving a 2016 Ford Fiesta.

While attempting to pass, the Honda Accord collided with a 2012 Nissan Sentra driven by a 56-year-old Bement woman who was traveling southbound. After the initial collision between the Honda Accord and the Nissan Sentra, the Honda Accord was pushed back into the northbound lane, where it then collided with the Ford Fiesta.

The driver of the Nissan Sentra was, unfortunately, pronounced dead at the scene by the Piatt County coroner and the driver of the Honda Accord was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Ford Fiesta was treated for minor injuries and released.

All three drivers were reported to have been wearing their seat belts. The driver of the Honda Accord was cited for improper passing, improper lane usage, and possession of recreational cannabis in a vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
